André Watts ( 1946 - 2023 ) was born in Nuremberg, Germany. His replacement for Glenn Gould in 1963 with Leonard Bernstein playing Liszt's Concerto No. 1 made him practically an instant star. He would go on to record many concertos including Brahms, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov as well as several solo works for Columbia. He would later record for EMI and Telarc and taught at Indiana University.
