Alexis Weissenberg ( 1929 - 2012 ) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. He studied at Julliard with Wanda Landowska and Artur Schnabel, and would sign with EMI and eventually Deutsche Grammophon. Through the course of his career he recorded composers which include Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Chopin, Stravinsky and a Beethoven concerto cycle with Karajan who called him one of the best pianists of the time.
