William Kapell ( 1922 - 1953 ) was born in New York City, New York. His virtuosic recordings of Rachmaninov, Khachaturian and Prokofiev led many to believe he was the most promising American pianist of his generation. Amidst recording the complete Chopin Mazurkas for RCA Victor he was killed in a plane crash returning to America after a tour in Australia.
