Yakov Zak ( 1913 - 1976 ) was born in Odessa, Russia. He studied at the Odessa Conservatory and later studied with acclaimed professor Heinrich Neuhaus. He would later teach at the Moscow Conservatory shortly after he graduated in 1935. Two years later he won the 1937 Chopin piano competition which gave his name much prominence at the time. He recorded many works for two pianos with renowned pianist, Emil Gilels.
