Wilhelm Backhaus ( 1884 - 1969 ) was born in Leipzig, Germany. He was well known for his faithful interpretations of Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Chopin. As a composer he wrote transcriptions of works by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Strauss.
