Viktor Merzhanov ( 1919 - 2012 ) was born in Tambov, Russia. He studied with Samuil Feinberg at the Moscow Conservatory and quickly became a respected virtuoso after his performances in the Chopin and Soviet Union piano competitions. He became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory where had many successful pupils. He recorded works ranging from Bach to Shostakovich and did so across the Melodiya.
