Maria João Pires ( 1944 ) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. She studied at the Lisbon Academy and subsequently the Musikakademie of Munich. Success at the 1970 Beethoven Bicentennial Competition gave her prominence. Her recordings across Denon. Erato and Deutsche Grammophone include works by Chopin, Schumann, Mozart and Schubert.
