Julius Katchen ( 1926 – 1969 ) was born in Long Branch, New Jersey. In his short career he played a range of music from Bach to Rorem, but is most known for his recordings of Liszt, Rachmaninov and for completing the complete solo piano works, piano concertos and violin sonatas of Brahms. He was widely considered to be one of the most promising American pianists of the 20th century, but he succumbed to cancer at age 42.
