Mitsuko Uchida ( 1948 ) was born in Atami, Japan. She enrolled at the Vienna Academy of Music and also studied with renowned pianists Wilhelm Kempff and Stefan Askenase. Success at the Beethoven, Chopin and Leeds competitions would launch her career. She has since recorded works by Debussy, Mozart and Schubert to much acclaim and is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.
