Vladimir Ashkenazy ( 1937 ) was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. He won the 1962 Tchaikovsky Concerto competition and since then has gone on to record an astounding number of works including complete works by Rachmaninov, Chopin, Schumann. Midway through his career as a soloist, he began conducting.
